Settings

Configure your RoastSource experience. Manage your display mode, theme, roaster, temperature probes, license key, and data backup. Settings is the control center for everything behind the scenes.

Overview

The Settings module controls your RoastSource configuration — how the app looks, how your data syncs, what equipment you use, and what features are available to you. It is the first place to visit when setting up RoastSource on a new device and the place to return when you need to adjust your setup.

Settings is split into groups: Account & Plan (your License Key), Preferences (Display Mode and Appearance), Your Roasting Setup (My Roasting Equipment and Temperature Probes), and Data & Backup (backup files, folder sync, and the Recycle Bin).

Workflows

1 Choosing Your Display Mode

  1. Go to Settings > Display Mode.
  2. Pick a mode from the three cards: Craft (roast by feel — Quick Roast, a simple Tasting view, Roasting Guides, and a few core reports), Journey (adds Blending and the full Equipment module), or Science (every module and analysis tool).
  3. Not sure? Tap "Open welcome flow" to rerun the short three-question welcome that suggests a mode based on how you roast.
  4. Switch anytime — your roasts, ratings, and inventory are untouched.

Things to Consider

In Craft mode, a “Discover more features” card on the main menu temporarily unhides the extra modules without changing your saved mode — handy for peeking at what Journey and Science offer before committing.

2 Setting Up Sync & Backup

  1. Tap Sync in the header bar to open Sync & Backup (it's also under Settings > Data & Backup).
  2. Under Local Folder Sync, pick a folder for your data — a folder on your device, or a cloud-synced folder such as Dropbox, Google Drive, or iCloud Drive. Folder sync needs Chrome or Edge.
  3. Turn on Auto Sync for automatic background backups. On any browser, Save File under File Backup downloads a full backup you can load later.

Things to Consider

Sync is optional. If you pick a Dropbox, Google Drive, or iCloud Drive folder, devices that share that folder see the same data, synced by your cloud provider. The backup file is plain data, not encrypted, so keep it somewhere you trust.

3 Adding Your Roaster

  1. Go to Settings > My Roasting Equipment.
  2. Tap Add Roaster.
  3. Enter the name, brand, model, and type (drum, fluid-bed, or hybrid).
  4. Enter batch capacity and probe information (thermocouple type and placement).
  5. Set this roaster as your default if it is your primary equipment.

Things to Consider

Accurate roaster data enables the adaptive profiling system in the Roasting module — the more precise your equipment information, the better the recommendations. Home includes one roaster profile. Your default roaster is pre-selected when you start a new roast.

4 Setting Up a Temperature Probe

  1. Go to Settings > Temperature Probes (the blue-highlighted section under Your Roasting Setup).
  2. Tap Configure to expand the probe settings panel.
  3. Enable the Use external probe toggle.
  4. For a USB probe, the device type is the Mastech MS6514. Using a WiFi probe (BounceBuster, or a TC4-WB, Croaster or other Artisan-compatible logger, marked testing) instead? Set it up in the WiFi Probe section — enter the IP shown on the logger's display and tap Connect.
  5. Leave the baud rate (connection speed) as set — it's filled in for your device.
  6. Choose your display temperature unit (°F or °C). RoastSource stores roast data in °F and automatically converts every temperature it shows to your chosen unit.
  7. Optionally adjust the calibration offset to fine-tune accuracy.
  8. Tap Save Probe Settings — the panel collapses and shows a summary of your configuration.

Things to Consider

Once a probe is set up, it's pre-selected as the temperature source when you start a new roast — you can still switch to manual entry. Probe logging with a live Rate of Rise (how fast the temperature is climbing) is included with Home. The USB probe logs bean temperature; the WiFi probe logs both bean and environment temperature. USB probes need Chrome or Edge on a computer; Safari and Firefox can't open USB connections. WiFi probes connect over your home network instead.

5 Activating a License

  1. Go to Settings > License Key (under Account & Plan).
  2. Enter the license key from your purchase email.
  3. Tap Activate.
  4. Your tier updates immediately and new features become available.

Things to Consider

To move your license to a new device, tap Deactivate this device on the old one first, then activate on the new one. If you've lost the old device, ask in the community forum's Help & Support area and we'll sort out a transfer.

After your 30-day trial: your data stays safe and the app keeps working for free, with room for 7 active beans, 15 saved roasts, 15 ratings, 2 blend recipes, and 3 storage bins. Java Geek, Brewing, Quick Roast logging, the roast timer, the vendor directory, the equipment database, and data export stay free. Adaptive Roast, the Roast Quality Score, roast insights, SCA cupping, reports, and blend versions need Home — $19.99 once, not a subscription.

6 Changing the Theme

  1. Go to Settings > Appearance (under Preferences).
  2. Choose Dark or Light (coffee cream).
  3. The change applies immediately and your preference is saved locally.

Things to Consider

Dark theme is the default and is recommended for most use — it is easier on the eyes during evening roasting sessions and reduces screen glare. The Light (coffee cream) theme uses warm tones inspired by latte art and is ideal for daytime use or well-lit environments. Theme preference is stored per device.

7 Backing Up and Restoring Your Data

  1. Tap Sync in the header, or go to Settings > Data & Backup and open Sync & Backup.
  2. Under File Backup, tap Save File to download everything — inventory, roasts, ratings, blends, equipment, and settings.
  3. On a new device, tap Load File and pick your backup to restore.
  4. Deleted something by mistake? Data & Backup > Recycle Bin keeps deleted items for 60 days.

Things to Consider

Your data lives in this browser. Save a backup file after big roast days, and keep a copy somewhere other than this device. Folder sync plus an occasional saved file gives you two independent backups.

8 Checking Your Plan

  1. Go to Settings > License Key.
  2. See your current plan (trial days left, Free, or Home).
  3. To buy Home, follow the link to LemonSqueezy, then enter the key from your purchase email.

Things to Consider

The free trial runs 30 days with no card and no account. Home is $19.99 once, not a subscription, and covers Inventory, Roasting (including Adaptive Roast), SCA 100-point cupping, Blending, Brewing, Equipment, Java Geek, Reports, the Roast Quality Score, and USB/WiFi probe logging. Profile import from Artisan (.alog) and CSV is coming soon to Home. Expert and Commercial tiers are in development — details when they're ready.

Tips & Best Practices

  • • Set up a backup early — a synced folder or a saved file protects your logs if this browser's data is ever cleared.
  • • The coffee-cream Light theme has warm, inviting tones that work well in bright environments.
  • • Folder sync plus an occasional saved backup file gives you two independent copies.
  • • Set up your temperature probe once in Settings — it will be automatically selected as the temperature source each time you start a roast.
