Log a Roasting Session

Two ways to roast in RoastSource: Quick Roast, where you roast by feel and tap the milestones, and Adaptive Roast, the full profiler with temperature logging. Here’s how each one works.

Quick Roast — roast by feel

Quick Roast is the default in Craft mode and the fastest way to log a batch. No thermometer needed — you roast by sight, sound, and smell, and tap the moments as they happen. Quick Roast logging stays free after the trial.

A

Pick a Coffee and a Roast Level

Tap the green Quick Roast button, choose a coffee from your inventory, enter your batch weight, and pick how dark you want it. RoastSource tells you what that level should taste like for this bean and builds a simple recipe for your roaster — or use your own saved recipe or a past roast.

B

Roast and Tap the Milestones

Start the timer and choose how much help you want: Minimal (just the timer), Guided (what to look, smell, and listen for at each stage, with a countdown to first crack), or Detailed. Tap Dry End, First Crack, and Drop as they happen. After first crack, the Drop button turns green when you're in a good window to finish.

Weigh, Save, and Taste Later

Weigh the roasted beans and RoastSource works out the weight loss, which tells you how dark the roast really went. Save it, let the coffee rest, and rate it when it's ready — in Craft mode it turns up in Tasting as “Ready to taste” after a few days.

Adaptive Roast — the full walkthrough

Adaptive Roast is the full profiler: it builds a plan for your bean and roaster, logs temperatures if you have a probe, and adjusts its advice as the roast goes. It's part of RoastSource Home.

1

Start an Adaptive Roast

From the main menu, tap Roasting, then Adaptive Roast. This is your roast-day command center — where you log a session from charge to cool.

2

Confirm Your Roaster

Your roaster profile stores your equipment details — brand, model, type (drum, fluid-bed, hybrid), batch capacity, and whether you have a probe. Pick from 40+ home roaster models. RoastSource Home holds one roaster profile; if you haven't set it up yet, there's a link to create it.

3

Set Environment

Log the roasting environment. Enter ambient temperature, select your roasting location (indoor, outdoor, garage, etc.), and optionally record humidity. If you've calibrated a location, RoastSource shows your first-crack time offset for consistency.

4

Choose Your Coffee

Select the coffee you're roasting from your inventory. Filter by region — Africa, Americas, Asia & Pacific — then drill into a specific country and pick the exact bean. You'll see remaining weight, processing method, and your best rating at a glance.

Set Dose & Storage

Enter your dose in grams. RoastSource shows your roaster's optimal batch range and warns if you're outside it. Optionally select a storage bin for the roasted output. Your inventory will automatically deduct the green weight used.

Temperature Logging

Choose whether to log temperatures during this roast. Select Yes to configure your temperature source, or No to skip and proceed without temp logging. If Yes, pick from Roaster Display, External Meter, USB Auto-Logger, or WiFi Probe based on your equipment. The USB and WiFi probes log automatically, with live Rate of Rise (how fast the temperature is climbing); the WiFi probe logs both bean and environment temperature.

Analyze Bean & Set Goals

RoastSource analyzes the selected bean and presents a roast-level spectrum — from Light (Cinnamon, 385°F / 196°C) through Medium (City+, 415°F / 213°C) to Dark (French, 460°F+ / 238°C+), with the recommended range for your bean highlighted. The roast goals are built for the bean you picked: each one pairs a roast level with what to expect in the cup. A washed Ethiopia, for example, offers Acidity-Forward (City), Balanced (City+), Chocolaty (Full City), and Smoky & Full (Full City+).

Roast & Log

With everything set, you're ready to roast. The session screen shows your bean, dose, target level, roaster, and location. Log temperature readings, mark first crack, track development time (the stretch from first crack to drop), and record notes as you go. When complete, save the session — it becomes part of your permanent roast history.
